Earthquake

Well it's not showing up on my feed yet, but we had an earthquake a few minutes ago, south of Palm Springs. I'm 25 north of LA and was skyping with my daughter in France, it was so odd to be on video with her while it happened. Luckily, just rolling here, like being in a boat gently rocking. But, it makes me nauseous every time. Anyway, had to share. Check out all the quakes along the fault:

And, 50 aftershocks in the 45 minutes since....

  1. WOW! That is amazing - 50 aftershocks. By the way, my son is going to France in the fall, for 8 months, to teach English. I guess skype is the best way to communicate? This is his first long term overseas adventure.

  2. Yikes, hope everyone is okay! Isn't the USGS site amazing? When I taught earth science (seems like a million years ago) we used to check that site every day to see what was happening around the world. For many of my students it was their first real taste of globalization. As they say, "It is a small world!"

  3. Nancy, yes skype is great and free! The time difference can be a challenge but she's a student so keeps late hours. We skype in the afternoon our time, or late evening. Paris is 9 hours ahead of us. We also message on fb a lot. That sounds like a great adventure!

Cathy-I know, it's sort of on my "speed dial", living here in SoCal. They have a feature where you can fill out a form if you felt it. I figure there are some folks at S=USGS saying--Oh, it's that woman from Castaic again--I never miss a chance to fill it out!

Luckily I haven't heard any reports of too much damage or injuries.

  4. There's your real-life data. Holy cow.

It's interesting, I used to be tuned in to California quakes, but all my relatives moved out of the state so it's not so central to my thinking anymore. Hope all is well with you and the aftershocks are tiny.

  5. I am creating my 'generating an argument' assignment using the very site you shared! So relevant and timely - thanks for sharing. I have never felt an earthquake - jealous!
